Shuen Wu

Hello all! I’m Shuen, a PhD candidate in ECE Illinois. I joined the group in 2023 and my research is scattered between quantum information theory and cryptography. I’m interested in applying quantum mechanics to real-world applications in secure communications.

Several specific directions I have pursued include

  • How do hyperentangled photons, that is photons with qubits encoded in multiple degrees of freedom, allow us to reduce error rates in various protocols?
  • What are the information theoretic properties of private states, bipartite quantum states that are able to produce secret bits upon simple local measurements?
  • How secure can we make protocols utilizing lossy channels against adversaries possessing some number of entangled pairs in Quantum Position Verification?

Some of my interests that I have not directly done research on, but that I would be very happy to collaborate on projects with, include machine learning, distributed systems, networking, and blockchains.

Outside of research, I enjoy bouldering; playing the piano; listening to classical music; playing racquet sports including (but not limited to!) tennis, badminton, ping pong, and pickleball; reading (and some writing on an amateur level) fantasy and sci-fi novels; cooking and baking; reading manga; and gaming.

I am quite involved in Graduate Christian Fellowship, the graduate division of the Intervarsity ministry on campus. We’d love to have you drop by and check out one of our small groups some time ๐Ÿ˜.

I am a (often heartbroken) Arsenal fan, a (sometimes heartbroken) Barcelona fan, and a (always heartbroken) Dplus Kia fan. Showmaker fighting ๐Ÿ˜”.

Here is a picture of me from 10th grade. Don’t worry, other than the hairline, I have not changed that much, there just are an exceedingly small number of photos of myself that vaguely resemble an acceptable human being ๐Ÿ˜‰.
